The Slew: 100%
About a year ago, my friend Paul took me out to lunch. I was having a bad day… a really bad day. We went for burgers… really good burgers. He took me to his local spot and I had one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. When we left the restaurant, Paul lit up the system and the opening chords of The Slew’s 100% emerged from the speakers… I was hooked. Immediately. When I found out it was Kid Koala’s new project, I was blown away.
Eric has always pushed the envelope with his own material, and more often than not his next move has been the one least expected from those who follow him closely. Unpredictability can be a curse, and predictability can be a bitch, a glitch or a hitch. Not this time. 100% is infectious. The video that Paul shot for It’s All Over serves as a great metaphor for the overall feeling of the album. Gritty, Raunchy, and imbued with humour and nostalgia, 100% is a rock album; the kind of rock album you’d expect from a true student of music and a proficient ground-breaker. Factor in trademark production from Mario C and it’s a wrap.
Gotta love the nod to Tone Loc with the strap-slung turntables and the lo-fi b/w footage.
